Rural Health Scholars Cultural Immersion Trip

The Rural Health Scholars program at SUU has been organizing trips to Las Vegas, the Four Corners area, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua for many years and they offer the opportunity to students to basically create and plan some of these trips.  I am fortunate enough to help plan the Fall Break trip to Las Vegas.  The purpose of these trips are for pre-health students planning to go on to graduate school to get experience in shadowing, patient/clinical exposure, and service among various populations.  On this trip, we plan to work a lot with the homeless population in Las Vegas performing health screens, serving them food, etc.  As a trip leader, I will make sure that organizations have been contacted, help with travel, and guide students to have a good experience.  These trips are an awesome opportunity for these students to bump up their resumes and be more prepared for the graduate schools and healthcare careers ahead of them.

Risk Assessment

The risk of this project will be moderate.  The main sources to worry about it driving around a large group of students to and around Las Vegas, working with the homeless population, using a blood glucose testing lancet and being around that blood, and whatever else could happen to somebody in Las Vegas.

Documentation Plan

Before and while I am on the trip, I will be keeping an electronic journal on my laptop and iPhone taking notes of what has been done and recording comments from students.  I will also be taking many pictures to document the activities that I am able to go to.  To make we stick to our plan, we will have individual schedules for each student to follow for the whole trip.  I cannot be at every event, so I may ask the other trip leaders to help take pictures of the students at the events.  After the trip ends, I will put all of the info recorded into a PowerPoint so that I can recruit a new trip leader for next year and they can have a resource to start with.

Potential Obstacles

  • Not all being able to fit in the cars we are taking from the motor pool.

    • Solution: Kasey will have his truck available if we cannot all fit.

  • The organization we planned with will not be ready for us or forgot about us coming.

    • Solution: We have a few events planned for second options or backups for each hour of the trip that we will be active.

  • Student not liking the schedule that was pre-made for them by us.

    • Solution: The survey beforehand should help, and if they still don’t like it, remind them that this is titled a cultural immersion trip and that they need to have many different kinds of experiences.
