Group of Students Spend Fall Break Helping Communities of Las Vegas
Cedar City, Utah

Rural Health Scholars from Southern Utah University is known to send pre-health students on break from school to areas where health screenings and other service is needed.  Many of the students plan to attend graduate schools such as medical or dental school where they will continue their education.  This past Fall, 25 students went to Las Vegas to serve many organizations including Salvation Army, Shade Tree, Opportunity Village, and Catholic Charities.  Students Deven Larisch, Adam Eddington, and Connor Finklea led the trip with a Rural Health Scholars staff supervisor.  The participating students learned many skills and gained important experiences they can use on their resume.

Students in this program also travel to the Four Corners area, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.  Rural Health Scholars has been providing this opportunity for students for years and also offer scholarships to help students afford the trip.  Before leaving for the trip, students receive training in health screening and working with people of diverse populations.  They perform screening of blood pressure, blood glucose, and vision.  Trip leaders worked hard to set up these trainings as well as service, patient exposure, and physician shadowing with organizations in Vegas.

Southern Utah University requires students to complete an EDGE project, an opportunity for students to do an experiential learning project that will help them learn new skills and have something to add to a resume.  Students are encouraged to complete EDGE projects in areas that they are interested in and may help them with their future careers.  Trip leaders and other participating students completed their EDGE projects on this trip serving in Las Vegas.
